Mohandas K. Gandhi said, “There is a sufficiency in the world for man’s need but not for man’s greed”.
Global warming is a dreaded subject these days. The average temperature of the Earth is rising. Conservation should be a subject of discussion in schools, offices, government meetings, etc. Whether or not all of us believe in global warming or not, the fact remains that increase in the levels of Carbon Dioxide levels are increasing. All of us are part of the rapid pace of development happening globally. There is lot of harm being done to the environment in the process. Hence, it is time that we take some responsibility and do our bit to save the environment, in our own context, space and time.
“The sun, the moon and the stars would have disappeared long ago…had they happened to be within the reach of predatory human hands”
– Havelock Ellis –
The frenetic pace and manner of economic growth happening all over the world, makes it imperative to seriously think about the quality of world we will leave behind for our future generations. We definitely inherited better quality of air, water and everything else natural. It is now our duty to put back what we have taken, during our lifetimes. If we don’t think about future generations, we will never be forgiven by them.
The way to participate is simple. This has to start from us and the message has to be passed on to other people. We can start by un-littering our own room. Keep your room organized and clean. Keep your office free of dirt. There is nothing wrong in picking litter at office and throwing it in the trash can. I think this will inspire people to do the same. Burning the garbage will not definitely help as it will produce gases harmful to our being, and also to the environment.
Keep a separate bag for domestic waste. Hand it over to the garbage collector who comes by every morning. Ensure the city has segregation process. Burning will not help. I think we have already read so much, and know about saving fuel, turning off electricity when not needed, etc.
There should be ways to capture extra CO2 by having plants or soil organisms absorb more of it. Trees that are cut are not definitely replaced. We all know that our planet will be that much cooler when trees are replaced. Plant trees, or support tree planting groups. They are already doing a good job. Environment will be a subject of intense discussions five years further from now.
“There’s so much pollution in the air now that if it weren’t for our lungs there’d be no place to put it all”
– Robert Orben-
